Clatskanie Baseball Leaves Grant Union Tourney 3-1

The Clatskanie High School boys varsity baseball team participated in the Les Schwab Classic Grant Union Tournament Thursday through Saturday, March 25-27, in John Day during spring break.

The Tigers left the tournament with a 3-1 count, falling only to Grant Union on the last day of game play.

Tigers Best Culver 13-1

In their opening game the Tigers beat Culver, 13-1, in a five-inning game.

The Tigers were fueled by 11 runs in the last inning.

Storm Engen was 2-3 with a home run and three RBIs.

Jaron Cruz had three hits and three RBIs.

Eli Pesio pitched four innings allowing one run on two hits.

Tigers Maul Taft 17-2

Despite rain, snow and hail, the Clatskanie battled against Taft winning 17-2.

Jacob Wemmer was 2-3 with four RBIs, leading the Tigers to victory.

Eli Pesio had three RBIs and Trevor Harvey had two hits.

Vince Heidmann pitched a complete game with four hits and four strikeouts.

Clatskanie Falls to Grant Union 10-0

In their final game of the tournament, the Tigers faced its most formidable opponent and lost.

Grant Union blanked Clatskanie 10-0 in five innings of play.

Grant Union’s pitcher Cody Williams all but shutdown Clatskanie’s offense allowing only two hits, both by Tim McReynolds.

Defensive miscues and timely hitting gave Jacob Wemmer the loss for Clatskanie, according to head coach Ryan Tompkins.

Tigers Manage Mules

The Clatskanie boys varsity baseball team defeated Wahkiakum, 13-3, in six innings on Tuesday, March 23.

Jacob Wemmer threw three strong innings with five strikeouts.

Storm Engen was 3-5 with a home run.

Vince Heidmann was 3-4 with two runs batted in (RBIs).

“We are a young team that is improving every game. We hit the ball pretty well today, and some of our pitchers got their first varsity experience,” stated head coach Ryan Tompkins.

Lady Tigers 4-1 in First Outings of Softball Season

Clatskanie Lady Tigers softball team has started out its season with four wins and one loss, Coach Brenda Brosseau reported this week.

In the opener March 15 against Knappa, Clatskanie won 3-0 with the winning pitcher, Kierra Kallunki, striking out 16. Tiaunna Hughes was 2 for 3 at the plate with two doubles.

Traveling to Seaside March 17 for a blustery and cold doubleheader, the Lady Tigers swept the Gulls 15-1 and 12-0.

Kallunki pitched the first game, striking out seven, while Katherine Jolma and Hunter Spendlove led at the plate with two doubles each. Lacey Britton pitched the second game and struckout 4. Leading hitters were Shantae Perez, who was 2 for 5; Tiaunna Hughes, 2 for 3 with two doubles; Kaytianne McArthur, 1 for 3, with a triple, and Danica Farbo, 2 for 4, with a double.

“All the girls played well,” said Coach Brosseau.

Clatskanie split a doubleheader with Estacada March 20, losing the first game 7-9 with Kallunki taking the loss. The Lady Tigers had 12 hits during the game with Hughes going 4 for 5 with two doubles.

Roaring back in the second game, Clatskanie won 20-10. Britton pitched for three innings and got the win. Leading hitters were Hughes, 2 for 4 with a triple; Spendlove, 2 for 5; Danica Farbo, 1 for 2 with a triple; Chelsea Backlin, 2 for 4, with a double, and Emily Reynolds, 3 for 5, with a double.

Defensive standouts were Reynolds and Holly Burghardt.

Clatskanie and Rainier Games Rained Out

Games set for the past week for both Clatskanie and Rainier high schools have been cancelled due to recent weather conditions.

The games will be rescheduled at a later date, weather permitting.

Columbians Best Castle Rock 8-7

The Rainier High School varsity boys baseball team played against Castle Rock on Thursday, March 25.

Keaton Herzog had three hits as the Columbians defeated the Rockets 8-7.

No additional game details were reported.

Mini Mart Holds on Tight to Lead

Clatskanie Mini Mart continues to hold onto first place this week in the Bowling Bags women’s bowling league.

Clatskanie Mini Mart clipped Flowers n’ Fluff, 3-1; Johnson Logging chopped West Mart, 3-1; West Columbia Realty sold Colvin’s Pub and Grill, 3-1, and Split Endz trimmed Salisbury and Callahan a 4-0 loss.

Sam Brandt bowled the high game of 224 and Julie Moore bowled the high series of 555.
