Rainier High School students demonstrated engineering innovation at PGE Park in Portland during a Portland Beavers baseball game on June 19.
Intel and the Portland Beavers baseball team mixed technology with sports to create an education-based competition, the Intel and Beavers Engineering Challenge.
Teams from five high schools in Oregon – Rainier Junior/Senior High School, Rainier; North Marion High School, Aurora; Amity High School, Amity; Liberty High School, Hillsboro, and Gaston Junior/Senior High School, Gaston – were selected to design, engineer and build unique devices, such as blimps and racing robots.
All projects were shown before and during the game.
Two baseball players from Clatskanie Middle/High School and four baseball and three softball players from Rainier Junior/Senior High School were recently selected to 3A Oregon all-state teams.
Players named to the all-state list included:
Clatskanie Tigers – Eli Pesio, catcher, first team; Jaron Cruz, outfield, third team.
Rainier Columbians – (baseball) Brad Tripp, infield, first team; Riley Tripp, outfield, first team; Mitch Staeffler, pitcher, third team; Ethan McGlone, outfield, third team.
Rainier Columbians – (softball) Jordyn Aberle, outfield, first team; Kylee Crape, pitcher, second team; Bailey Jackson, catcher, second team.
The Clatskanie-Rainier Babe Ruth Baseball League recently announced their 2010 All-Star selections for upcoming district tournament play July 7-12 at Volcano Stadium in Salem.
Players selected for the 13-year-old team include: Trevor Berg, Nick Donaldson, Tanner Dykes, German George, Griffin Haas, Mica Karber, Carson Nicklous, Colton Puzey, Austin Robb, Thomas Shelby and Jeffery Tripp.
Due to unforeseen circumstances, there will not be a 14-year-old team competing in the district tournament. However, 14-year-old players earning all-star status are Chase Berg, Brayden Day, Austin Haas, Seth Makinson, Chris Puckett, Naythan Taylor, Sawyer Weldon, Troy Welter, Wesley Tripp, Jason Larson, Trevor Williams, Tyler Coulter and Nick Hanks.
All-Star season sponsors include Fultano’s Pizza Parlor; Kynsi Construction; Clatskanie Dental Clinic, Dr. Phil Ross, and Longview Fiber Paper and Packaging, Inc.
Briarcliff swimming pool, located at the Rainier Junior/Senior High School, is offering summer swimming lessons in four sessions: session one, June 21-July 2; session two, July 5-16; session three, July 19-30; session four, Aug. 2-13.
All sessions will have one hour classes Monday through Friday for two weeks.
Class times available are 9-10 a.m., 11 a.m.-12 noon and 5:30-6:30 p.m.
Children ages three and up are welcome. All class levels and swimming abilities are taught.
Cost is $35 per session.
To register a child, call 503 556-4217 or arrive at the pool 15 minutes early on the first day of class.
