Tiger Cheerleaders Fundraiser Planned

The Clatskanie High School varsity cheerleaders are hosting a garage sale and bake sale on Friday, Aug. 27, and Saturday, Aug. 28. in front of Turning Point Community Service Center, 220 East Columbia River Highway.

They also will be accepting aluminum cans for a can drive and a car wash is planned for Saturday during the garage sale.

The team is fundraising to buy cheerleading mats, and to help pay for a professional from the United Cheer Association (UCA) to come to the school this year.

The varsity cheerleaders are planning a half-time show for the first Tigers home football game, Sept. 24, and will be hosting a junior cheer clinic at the last home game on Nov. 5.

CMS Football Reminder

Clatskanie Middle School football players are reminded that participation forms need to be filled out and turned in to the high school main office as soon as possible.

Preparation practice begins on Tuesday, Aug. 31, on the football field from 5:30-6:30 p.m. The first official practice starts on Tuesday, Sept. 7, at 6:30 p.m.

Concussion testing will be held Wednesday, Sept. 1, in the high school computer lab at 1 p.m. Football gear will be handed out following the testing.

A parent meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 1, at 6:30 p.m. at the high school.

Those with questions or for more information contact head coach Tim Van Voorst by e-mailing tvanvoorst@csd.k12.or.us.

CMHS Receives OSAA Grant for Concussion Evaluation Program

Clatskanie Middle/High School (CMHS) is among 13 Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA) members to receive an approximately $10,000 grant to implement the ImPACT Concussion program during the 2010-11 school year.

CMHS vice principal/athletic director Annikke Olson reported on the program at the Clatskanie School District board meeting Monday, Aug. 23.

ImPact stands for immediate post-concussion assessment and cognitive testing. It is the first, most-widely used, and most scientifically validated computerized concussion evaluation system and has become a standard tool used in comprehensive clinic management of concussions for athletes of all ages, according to a press release from the OSAA.

All CMHS athletes are currently taking computerized “baseline” tests. Those tests can be used by physicians to assess the seriousness of a concussion and monitor the healing process, should a student receive a head injury, the OSAA explained.

“Hopefully, we won’t need it, but in the event of some kind of injury, that data will help a physician make a decision regarding an athlete’s ability to return to play,” Olson told the school board. “It’s a huge step in the safety of our athletes and all our students.”

The OSAA grant will allow the district to implement and operate the program for three years.

CMHS Welcomes Back All Athletes

Welcome back to another year of Clatskanie athletics. As we approach a new school year and the athletic seasons, I am filled with hopes of team and individual successes. Our young athletes are showing promise for growth and have been working hard over the summer in preparation for their upcoming sports.

As always, we at Clatskanie Middle/High School (CMHS) invite you to join us for our athletic events throughout the year. Having fans in the stands helps to bring the game alive for our athletes. Hope to see you there.

Here are a few pieces of information you will need to get you son or daughter ready for their next athletic season.

• All athletes will need to fill out the following athletic forms and submit them to the CMHS main office prior to their first day of practice. The main office will be open starting Aug. 9, so feel free to stop in or call if you have questions.

1. Application to participate in interscholastic athletics, mark all sports you plan to participate in.

2. School sports pre-participation exam parts one and two.

3. Drug and alcohol testing general authorization form.

• All athletes must pay their athletic fees of $100 prior to their first day of practice.

• All athletes must pay their student body fee of $20 for high school and $15 for middle school prior to their first day of practice.

• We are implementing a mandatory attendance parent meeting requirement for all of our high school athletic programs. There will be standard parent meeting dates for fall, winter and spring athletics where the parents will have to sign in and we will share important information about our teams and expectations.

The dates of these meetings are: fall, Sept. 1; winter, Nov. 18; spring, March 8.

The timeline for each of these meeting is: team scrimmages, 5-6 p.m.; boosters barbecue, 5:30-6:30 p.m.; group assembly in auditorium, 6:30-7:15 p.m.; individual team meetings in separate rooms, 7:15-8 p.m.

• Our CMHS athletics web page is up and running. Check this page often for updates and important information. To get there, go to our district main page at www.csd.k12.or.us, click on “Middle/High School” on the top of the page, then click on “athletics” on the right hand side bar.

If you have any other questions, please feel free to contact us. We look forward to another year of successful athletic seasons.

Athletically yours,

Annikke Olson
