By a narrow 52-50 margin, Clatskanie High School boys varsity basketball team scored a victory over Gaston at the Gervais Tournament Tuesday, Dec. 27.
Leading the Tigers were Tyler Johnson with 30 points and seven rebounds, Tyler Puzey with 13 points and 11 rebounds, and Kyle Sharek with eight rebounds.
Coach Jim Engen also credited Sharek with taking a charge with seven seconds left on the clock to help seal the game.Chadem Odell played great defense against Gaston’s best player, Engen said. Travis Griffiths also put in a solid game for Clatskanie, making two big free throws down the stretch.
“We started slow,” Engen reported, “scoring only four points in the first quarter.” For the game the Tigers made 38 percent of their shots.
“The key was that we out-rebounded them 34 to 16,” including 23 offensive rebounds,” Engen said, “and held them to only seven rebounds in the second half.”
Engen described the game as “a brawl. The refs let a lot go, but we hung in there and battled.”
The Tigers didn’t gain the lead until Puzey made a three-point play with 30 seconds left on the clock to bring the score to 51-50.
“We did not shoot well but we still found a way to finish,” Engen added. “I’m proud of them. It was a total team effort.”
The win brought the Tigers to 4-3 for the season, and 1-1 in league.
Clatskanie was scheduled to play the winner of a Gervais/Nestucca match-up on Wednesday, Dec. 28.
