Clatskanie Boys Defeat OES 56-48

Strong rebounding by the Clatskanie boys varsity basketball team overcame problems with ball handling and gave the Tigers a 56-48 victory over Oregon Episcopal School in the Clatskanie Middle/High School gym Tuesday, Jan. 24.

Leading the Tigers were Tyler Johnson with 20 points and 11 rebounds, Tyler Puzey with 15 points and eight rebounds, Jordan Drabandt with nine points and six rebounds, Kyle Sharek with six points, six rebounds and four assists, and Krieter Stavig with four points, six rebounds and three assists.

The Tigers out-rebounded OES 39-18, but suffered from 21 turnovers. “We did not take care of the ball very well, especially in the second half,” said Coach Jim Engen.

The Clatskanie boys are now 6-3 in league, 9-6 overall for the season.

Next action was set for Wednesday at home against Portland Adventist Academy with the varsity game starting at 7 p.m.

 

Tiger Boys Win Two Games

The Clatskanie High School (CHS) varsity boys basketball team won two games in recent play.

On Saturday, Jan. 21, the Tigers beat Catlin Gable 43-35.

Leading the Tigers were Tyler Johnson and Tyler Puzey with 15 points each, Kyle Sharek had seven points and Carter Olsen totaled five points.

Johson also had five rebounds and two steals. Puzey had four rebounds. Sharek contributed seven assists and two steals.

Varsity coach Jim Engen commented “Chadam Odell and Colten Puzey were outstanding on defense and Carer Olsen played a great game off the bench.”

Engen also said “I am very proud of how our guys stayed patient throughout the game. It shows how much they have improved and bought into the team system.”

CHS boys basketball team topped Oregon Episcopal School (OES) on Saturday, Jan. 14. The winning score was 50-36.

Johnson led the attack with 23 points and seven rebounds.

Jordan Drabant added nine points and three rebounds.

Sharek contributed eight points, six rebounds and three assists.

Puzey scored six points, six rebounds and three steals.

“It was a great team effort. We started slow offensively but were able to take care of the ball and make our free throws down the  the stretch. Overall I was very pleased with the effort,” said Coach Engen.

The Tigers now have an 8-6 win-loss record overall and  are 5-3 in Lewis and Clark League play.

 

Lady Tigers Win Three Games

Clatskanie High School girls varsity basketball team grabbed three wins in recent games includinga one point victory Tuesday night.

CHS 27 OES 26

On Tuesday, Jan. 23, the Lady Tigers faced Oregon Episcopal School (OES) on the Tiger court. Clatskanie narrowly defeated OES with a final score of 27-26.

Danica Farbo led the Lady Tigers with nine points. Teauna Hughes scored six points, had eight rebounds and five steals.

McKenzie Garlock and Kierra Kallunki scored five points each and Megan Strong scored two.

CHS 35 Catlin Gable 32

The Lady Tigers played Catlin Gable on Saturday, Jan. 21, getting the win in the last minutes of the game. The final score was 35-32.

Leading Clatskanie was Teauna Hughes with 13 points.

Danica Farbo scored 10 points, while Kierra Kallunki had four points.

Jocelyn Dines, Shelby Weldon, Kelli Burgher and Megan Strong each contributed two points.

McKenzie Garlock had 10 rebounds and four assists.

CHS 36 OES 29

On Jan. 14, the Lady Tigers took on Oregon Episcopal School (OES) winning 36-29.

The Lady Tigers were led by Hughes who had 16 points and eight rebounds.

Dines scored nine points, Burgher had four points, and Farbo scored three points.

Garlock and Weldon both had 2 points.

 

Rainier JV Girls Win Against OES

Rainier girls junior varsity (JV) basketball team beat Oregon Episcopal School (OES) 32-23 in an OES-hosted game on Thursday, Jan. 19.

Jenny Westlund led the Lady Columbians with 15 points. Dominique “Becky” Pedersen added six points and nine rebounds.

 

Senior Class Raffle Winners Drawn

Winners of raffle prizes  used as a fundraiser for the Class of 2012 drug and Alcohol Free Party were drawn Tuesday, Jan. 23 during half-time of the boys varsity basketball game against OES at Clatskanie Middle/High School.

Linda King won a quilt. Neil Rininger won a 2001 PT Cruiser.

 

JV II Tigers Take Two Wins

Clatskanie’s junior varsity II (JVII) boys basketball team won two games in recent action.

Clatskanie topped Catlin Gable 43-32 on Saturday, Jan. 21, in Portland.

Micah McLeod led the Tigers with 12 points.

Griffin Haas had six points, three assists and seven rebounds.

The JVII team pulled out from behind for a win on Jan. 14. The final score was 36-33.

Jaden Johnson and Codi Blodgett led the Tigers with 10 points each.

Thomas Shelby grabbed 13 rebounds and five steals.

JVII coach Calvin Olsen said “All the boys are contributing positively and as a result the Tigers now have a 5-2 record.”

Rainier Boys Varsity, JV Top OES

Rainier’s varsity boys basketball team grabbed a 49-33 victory over Oregon Episcopal School (OES) on Jan. 19, at a game played at OES.

The Columbians took the  first quarter lead, 13-10, and held OES to single-digit scoring in the next three quarters.

Brad Tripp led the Columbians with 24 points, seven rebounds and six assists.

Cody Gellatly scored seven points and had six rebounds.

Marshall Dean contributed four points and five assists.

Erik Sutfin scored four points.

Sala Clark had three points and grabbed seven rebounds.

Jordan Brittain scored three points.

Rainier JV 29 OES JV 28

Rainier boys junior varsity (JV) basketball team pulled off a close win in the final minutes of a game against Oregon Episcopal School (OES) on Jan. 19. The final score was 29-28.

JV coach Jared Baughman said, “This is a game that we can look back on as an example that we can win on the road while trailing late in a game.”

Rainier Swim Team Competes in Wahtonka Invitational

Rainier High School boys swim team came in sixth out of eleven teams when they travelled to Hood River Aquatic Center for The Dalles-Wahtonka Eagle Indian Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 14.

Rainier girls finished in tenth place.

Oesterman Wins Title at Tournament

Rainier’s CJ Oesterman won the 285-pound championship at the R.A. Long tournament held on Saturday, Jan. 21, in Longview.

Justice Larson finished third at 113 pounds. Emmett Earlywine at 106 pounds, Nick Hanks at 152 pounds and Yerko Berick at 160 pounds all finished in fourth place for Rainier.

The Columbians competed with only half of a team due to injury or illness, but came away with a fifth place team finish. Kelso won the team title followed by Centralia.

Columbians Open League Wrestling

Rainier opened the district one league dual-meet wrestling season with two team wins at Warrenton on Thursday, Jan. 19.

The Columbians defeated De LaSalle 78-18, picking up wins by forfeit from Emmett Earlywine (106 pounds), Justice Larson (113), Sean Johnson (120), Jared Thomas (126), Brandyn Aberle (132) and CJ Oesterman (285).

Winning by fall in the first round for Rainier were Nick Hanks (152) and Yerko Berick (160). Ty Schmunk won by fall in 44 seconds at 138 pounds and Oliver Bolden won by a 19-second fall at 145 pounds.

Rainier defeated Warrenton, 47-33, in the second dual of the evening. Winning by fall for the Columbians were Charlie Vestal (195) in the first round, Larson (113) in the second round, Johnson (120) in the third round and Oesterman (285) in the second round.

Earlywine (106) won in overtime by a 6-4 decision, Bolden (145) won by 14-5 major decision, and Evan Gleaves won by 16-2 major decision. Berick won by forfeit at 170 pounds.

Rainier hosts Clatskanie and Corbett on Thursday, Jan. 26, with the first dual scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.

 

Rainier Boys Win Swim Meet

Rainier boys swim team beat Astoria and Scappoose at a three team meet held at Astoria Aquatic Center on Thursday, Jan. 12.

Rainier boys topped Astoria 103 to 64 while outscoring Scappoose 88.50 to 80.50. Rainier girls lost to Astoria 99 to 61 and Scappoose 116 to 47.

Briarcliff Pool Hours Announced

Briarcliff Pool at Rainier Junior/Senior High School has announced upcoming events.

Swim lessons will be offered Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from Jan. 30-Feb. 17, from 5:30-6:30 p.m. The cost of lessons is $33. No pre-registration is necessary.

Morning exercise and lap swim will be offered from 8-9 a.m.

The pool is available to rent any time outside of school and swim team practice hours.

The cost is $42 per hour for up to 30 people, $65 per hour for 31-50 people.
