Rodeo Sees Capacity Crowds

The grandstands were full as spectators were turned away from the Columbia County Fair and Rodeo, National Professional Rodeo Association (NPRA) event Friday and Saturday, July 20 and 21, according to fair board secretary, Randy Hansen.

Saturday had near record attendance, with about 20,000 visitors over the five day event. Hansen also reported near record numbers of 4-H kids showing animals, especially in the small animal barn, where extra cages had to be built. He noted an increase in the cattle barn, which he said hasn’t been full in a number of years.

The winning cowboys and cowgirls have been announced for the NPRA rodeo. No qualifying rides were completed in the bull riding event.

Bareback: Evan Miller, 1st, 78 points; Nick Gutwiller, 2nd, 75; Tony Buckman, 3rd, 74.

Saddle Bronc: Mark Gage, 1st, 77 points; T.B. Hannan, 2nd, 74; Justin Chappell, 3rd, 69.

Breakaway Roping: Kayla Tiegs, 1st, 2.0 seconds; Bailey Minor, 2nd, 2.6; Michelle Lyons, 3rd, 3.0.

Barrel Racing: Jodi Goodrich, 1st, 17.70 seconds; Lexi Heater, 2nd 17.86; Rachel Coleman, 3rd, 17.89.

Tie Down Roping: Brett Hale, 1st, 9.1 seconds; Kurtis Barry, 2nd, 10.2; Steve Hoffman, 3rd, 10.8.

Steer Wrestling: Austin Woods, 1st, 5.5 seconds; Travis Erb, 2nd, 7.5; Chase Richter, 3rd, 7.8.

Team Roping: Casey Awbrey and Chris McKoen, 1st 5.3 seconds; Justin Simon and Harley Martin, 2nd, 5.8; Andy Carlson and Jake Stanley, 3rd, 6.2.

Between 100 and 130 kids participated in the Columbia County Junior Rodeo, Thursday, July 19, according to Mark Sandstrom. The participants were divided into four age groups: small fries, 6 and under; big fries, 7-10; juniors, 11-14; seniors 15-18.

Small Fry Mutton Bustin: Eli Page, 1st, 60 points; Garrett Oliver, 2nd, 58; Austin Stockwell, 3rd, 57.

Big Fry Steer Daubing: Kyle Parnell, 1st, 3.25 seconds; Dustin Talbot, 2nd, 11.69.

Junior Steer Daubing: Zachery Raley, 1st, 1.5 seconds; Cheyeane Phillips, 2nd, 2.93; Jacob Railey, 3rd, 3.16.

Senior Steer Daubing: Shaylee McGuire, 1st, 1.72 seconds; Jaden Thurston, 2nd, 2.84; Brandy Thurston, 3rd, 4.04.

Briarcliff Pool Sets Last Swimming Lessons for Summer

One last session of swimming lessons for the summer season is scheduled at Briarcliff Pool in Rainier Aug. 6-17. Lessons are set Monday-Friday and cost is $35 per child. Time slots available are 9-10 a.m., 10-11 a.m., 11 a.m.-12 noon, 5-6 p.m. and 6-7 p.m.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be served in the high school cafeteria for children up to age 18 free of charge, as part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture summer meal program. Meal times are set from 8:15-9 a.m., 11:15 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and 6-7:30 p.m.

The pool is also open for recreational swimming and water exercise classes/lap swim throughout the summer. Morning exercise class/lap swim is scheduled Monday through Thursday from 7:45-8:45 a.m. There will be no class Aug. 20-Sept. 15.

Recreational and lap swimming is set Tuesdays from 1-3 p.m., Wednesdays from 12:30-2:30 p.m., and Thursdays from 7-8:30 p.m.

All lifeguards and instructors are American Red Cross-certified.

General admission prices are $3.50 for adults, and $2.50 for children and seniors. Swim passes, which may be used for 24 visits, are $53 adults, or $35 children and seniors. Passes do not expire and may be used for water exercise class, and recreational/lap swim.
