Clatskanie High School cross country saw another busy week of racing, taking part in the Trojan Relays on Oct. 4 and the Banks Mountain Run on Oct. 6.
Three teams of Clatskanie runners took part in the Trojan Relays, held at Trojan Park near Rainier and sponsored by St. Helens High School.
All runners competed on the same 3,100-meter course which looped around the pond in the park.
The Tiger varsity boys team consisted of Jacob Kent, 12:04; Chase Berg, 12:56; Drexler Martin, 13:13; Trask Hill, 13:15, and Austin Deanhardt, 13:54.
Lynn Siltala, 14:06; Taryn Clappé, 15:08; Megan Strom, 15:43; Alyssa Moore, 16:48, and Brooke Hamilton, 17:35, ran for the Tiger girls.
A combined team of Henry Hunt, 14:45; Alex Gaylin, 15:42; Tommy Miller, 17:33; Bray Hodges, 18:32, and Arlee Nosack, 19:40, also competed for Clatskanie.
Tigers Take on Banks Mountain Run
The Tiger cross country team traveled to Stub Stewart State Park in the Banks area to take part in the first ever Banks Mountain Run on Saturday, Oct. 6.
The 5,000-meter course, which began in the parking lot of the state park, took runners over a hilly loop trail.
Boys varsity team members were Jacob Kent, 22:17; German George, 23:55; Chase Berg, 24:48; Austin Deanhardt, 25:34; Trask Hill 25:46, and Alex Gaylin, 27:35.
Lady Tigers covering the course were Lynn Siltala, 26:13; Alyssa Moore, 30:27; Brooke Hamilton, 33:01, and Arlee Nosack, 42:13.
Junior varsity runners Henry Hunt, 30:06, and Tommy Miller, 32:52, also competed.
RMS Volleyball Travels to Ilwaco, Neah-Kah-Nie
Rainier Middle School (RMS) volleyball played two games on the road recently, traveling to Ilwaco on Oct. 3 and Neah-Kah-Nie on Oct. 8.
The Rainier green team had a tough night against Ilwaco losing in three 20-25, 25-27 and 15-17.
“All of our players are serving overhand which is more difficult,” said Coach Tina Edwards. “We are getting better.”
Chianne Kolln led the team with seven aces from the service line.
Rainier black won 25-10, 25-13 and 15-10.
Jadyn Crape and Breana Edwards each had nine aces for the night.
Rainier Black Remains Undefeated
Rainier black continued its winning ways defeating Neah-Kah-Nie 25-20, 25-14 and 15-5.
The Rainier black team has a perfect 7-0 record on the season.
Edwards had a season high 15 serving attempts with 14 aces and no errors.
Rainier green lost to Neah-Kah-Nie 7-25, 17-25 and 7-15 for a 1-6 season record.
Masie Tipton had her strongest serving night of the season said Coach Edwards. Tipton had four overhand serves and two aces.
Bailey Crape had two points served and one ace.
RMS volleyball hosts Vernonia for games on Oct. 10.

Opening the season’s league football action for both teams, Rainier prevailed over Clatskanie 20-14 in a closely-matched over-time fight at Clatskanie on Friday, Oct. 5.
The Clatskanie Tigers reached the end zone first with a six-yard run by quarterback Nick Donaldson in the second quarter and the Tigers led 6-0 at the half.
Rainier answered in the third quarter and the score was tied 6-6 until the fourth.
Clatskanie took back the lead with a one-yard touchdown by Donaldson, which he backed up with a two-point conversion putting the score at 14-6.
With less than four minutes left on the clock, the Rainier Columbians tied the game. Clatskanie made a long drive, but could not complete it before time ran out.
In over-time Rainier scored again and the Tigers did not answer on their possession.
“Incredible football game! Our boys played extremely well. It was heartbreaking for it to end the way it finished.” said Clatskanie Coach Tim Warren following the game.
Rainier Coach Mike King commented, “It was a very physical game on both sides of the ball. We did what we had to do at the end. I’m very proud of this team and the way we responded to finish the game.”
For Clatskanie, Cedet Bailey led the team in rushing with 74 yards on 14 carries. Chris Puckett caught two balls for 26 yards to lead the team in receiving.
On the Columbian side, Derek King rushed for 253 yards on 22 carries and had two touchdowns. Oliver Bolden had one rushing touchdown and Parker Dean added 60 yards rushing.
Shaine Warren led the Clatskanie defense with 16 tackles. Kyle Sharek had one interception. Coach Warren commended the defensive line highlighted by the play of Travis Griffiths, Tyler Sherwin and Sawyer Weldon.
Rainier’s defensive standouts were, Jason Larson, Charlie Vestal, Nick Hanks and Parker Dean. Devyn Heflin had an interception for RHS.
Clatskanie faces Warrenton on Friday, Oct. 12, for their homecoming game at 7 p.m. in Clatskanie.
Rainier’s scheduled game against Corbett, this Thursday has been canceled due to Corbett’s withdrawal from varsity play. (See story that begins on page 1)
Flowers ‘N Fluff padded their lead this week, pulling further ahead of the pack in the Bowling Bags women’s bowling league.
Flowers ‘N Fluff struck down Clatskanie Mini Mart 4-0. Johnson Logging beat Salisbury 3-1, Colvin’s Pub and Grill cut Split Enz 3-1, and Bling Gals topped West Mart 3-1.
Carol Smith bowled the high game score of 195, and Markreta “Sam” Brandt had the high series for the week with 512 points.
