Tigers 2-3 on Arizona Trip

Clatskanie High School baseball players started their third annual spring break trip to Arizona with a 19-10 win against Walden Grove High School in Suharita, Ariz. on Friday, March 22, followed by games on Saturday, Monday and Tuesday.

Against Walden Grove, the Tigers were down 3-0 in the top of the third inning. They came alive scoring four or more runs in each of the next four innings. Clatskanie had 18 hits, including six extra base hits.

Colten Puzey was 4-5 with four runs scored and three stolen bases. Mica Karber had two extra base home runs.

Coming in on relief, Karber earned the win, pitching five innings, allowing one earned run on two hits.

Next, the Tigers faced the Blaze of Langley, British Columbia on Saturday, March 23, losing 10-5 in a five-inning time-shortened game.

The Tigers were paced by a Nick Donaldson two-run single and a Micah McLeod run-batted-in (RBI) single.

The Tigers then fell to Colorado Academy 6-2 in the first half of a doubleheader Monday, but dominated Rancho Solano in the second game, winning 23-7.

Against Colorado Academy, the Tigers were up 2-0 in the sixth inning, when timely hitting on Colorado’s part and fielding miscues allowed a five-run inning for the academy. The Tigers lost 6-2.

“German George pitched well for the Tigers in defeat” said Coach Ryan Tompkins.

In a blow-out first inning Clatskanie scored 14 runs with two outs enroute to a 23-7 victory over Rancho Solano for the second half of Monday’s doubleheader.

Kyle Sharek led the way with three hits and three runs. Nick Donaldson had two hits.

McLeod pitched five innings of relief for the win.

In the final game of the trip against East Linn Christian Academy, the Tigers fell 3-1, despite having loaded bases and one out.

“The Tigers only managed three hits, but had plenty of scoring opportunities.” said Coach Tompkins.

“Karber pitched well in defeat, allowing one earned run and striking out seven while only allowing one run,” commented Tompkins

The Tigers finished their spring break trip 2-3 and are now 6-4 for the season.

They return to play in Oregon on Tuesday, April 2, at Willamina.

JV in Arizona Lose 15-8

Clatskanie’s junior varsity (JV) baseball team started their Arizona spring trip against Walden Grove JV. The Tigers jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first inning, but were unable to hang on.

Clatskanie JV lost 15-8. Leading Tiger hitters were Damien Strowger with two triples and two RBIs, Cole Warren and Griffin Haas each had RBI singles.

Columbians Open Season 3-1

Going three-for-four to open the the 2013 season, the Rainier High School varsity baseball team defeated Benson Polytechnic High School 2-1 on March 11, Banks High School 14-3 on March 18 and Toutle Lake High 6-1 on March 19, then fell 5-2 to Banks.

In their opening game, the Columbians scored single runs in the third and fourth innings, holding Benson to zero, until allowing a single run in the fifth.

Oliver Bolden pitched the win and Nayt Taylor was credited with the save.

Bolden and Nick Hanks each had one run-batted-in (RBI).

Wes Tripp stole one base.

The Columbians’ second win started with an eruption of 11 runs in the first inning.They followed up with three more in the fourth. Banks failed to reach home plate until the fifth, when they scored three runs.

Bolden, Tripp and Hanks each had three RBIs and Jordan Brittain had one.

Bolden stole two bases; Brittain and Ethan Langley each stole one.

Taylor pitched the win.

In Toutle, Rainier scored once in the second and twice in the the third. Toutle made one trip around the bases in the third, then the Columbians scored three more runs in the third.

Hanks and Even Gleaves each had two RBIs and Langley had one. Tripp, Hanks and Gleaves hit doubles.

Bolden pitched the win.

At the Seaside Tournament on Tuesday, March 26, the Columbians met Banks for the second time and lost 2-5 after a sixth inning rally for Banks.

Banks scored first with two runs in the second inning. Rainier answered in the third with two of their own.

In the sixth, Banks had three runs to gain the win.

Carson Nicklous had Rainier’s only two RBIs for the game. Nicklous, Gleaves and Austin Robb-Farvour each hit a double.

Bolden pitched the majority of the game with Taylor and Robb-Farvour relieving.

Seaside tournament play continued with games against Cascade High on Wednesday, March 27 and Taft on Thursday, March 28.

Rainier Boys Run Well at Daily Astorian Invitational

Rainier seniors Devyn Heflin and Devon Marshall secured first place finishes for themselves and the Columbian 4×100 boys relay team at The Daily Astorian Track Invitational on Thursday, March 21. The meet was held at Seaside High School.

Heflin raced to first in the 200-meter race, while Marshall grabbed first in the 400 meters. Both boys were members of the first place 4×100 relay team along with Clay Wimmer and Parker Dean.

CHS Track and Field “Breaks Ice” in Opener

Clatskanie High School’s boys and girls track and field team kicked off its season at the Lewis and Clark League Icebreaker meet on March 13. The multi-school event was hosted by Valley Catholic High School in Beaverton.

The Clatskanie girl’s team placed fourth following first place showings by senior Carley Lannan in both the shot put and discus. Lannan threw the shot put 35’4” and the discus 87’11”.

CHS JV Girls Crush Wahkiakum

The Clatskanie High School junior varsity girls’ softball team defeated Wahkiakum 15-0 on Monday, March 25.

Brittney Abbott was 3-4 from the plate with a double and two singles. Megan Strong was 2-4 with a double, a single and three runs batted in (RBI). Kacy Strong was 2-4 with two singles

For the win, pitcher Kacy Strong gave up no hits, struck out eight and had only three walks.

“The girls are continuing to work hard and improve every time they step out on the field.” said Coach Heather Strong

West Mart Holds BB Lead, F ‘n F Tries Comeback

In the Bowling Bags women’s bowling league, Flowers ‘N Fluff is working its way back up the ranks into second place behind West Mart, after falling from the top spot to fourth place about a month ago.

Colvin’s Pub and Grill dropped back to third place and Clatskanie Mini Mart rose to fourth this week.

Flowers ‘N Fluff bowled over Johnson Logging 4-0, and West Mart and Colvin’s Pub and Grill played a close match scoring 2-2.

Clatskanie Mini Mart beat Salisbury 4-0. A forfeit by Split Enz resulted in a 4-0 win by Bling Gals over the team.

High scores for the week were bowled by West Mart teammates Wilma Sartin with a high game score of 193, and Linda DeGandi who bowled the high series of 507.
