Clatskanie Runners Face Three Course Challenge

The Clatskanie Middle/High School cross country team joined over 80 other teams to participate in the three-course challenge at Camp Rilea in Warrenton on Saturday, Sept. 21.

Runners were randomly selected to participate in one of three courses of varying difficulty.

With a time of 26:45 on the 5000 meter difficult course, Lynn Siltala took fifth for small high schools division.

Jacob Moore ran the 3000 meter middle school course in 12:22, to place eighth overall for  middle school boys and  the fourth for eighth graders.

Five Clatskanie boys ran the 5000 meter difficult course: Isaac Points ran it in 24:35; Chase Berg, 25:34, Austin Deanhardt, 26:45; Alex Gaylin, 28:33; Henry Hunt, 32:18.

Alyssa Moore ran the difficult course in 32:47; Brooke Hamilton ran 34:11.

Three Clatskanie boys ran the medium 5000 meter course: Griffin Haas, 25:22; Thomas Shelby, 27:42, and Tommy Miller, 31:21.

Three Tigers were selected to run the 4500 meter easy course: Track Hill, 23:17; Cole Warren, 24:50, and Lukas Roubal.

“We had a great meet at Camp Rilea on Saturday. All three courses featured a large watery mud pit crossing, sandy trails, and steep hills.” noted Coach Amber-Dawn Ingwerson.

Middle and high school runners travel to Knappa on Thursday, Sept 26.

The team will also run in the Nike Pre-nationals at Portland Meadows on Saturday, Sept. 28.

Rainier Falls 26 -22 to Portland Christian

The Rainier High School (RHS) varsity football team lost 26-22 to Portland Christian on the RHS field Friday, Sept. 20.

Quarterback Wes Tripp rushed for two touchdowns. Running back Nick Hanks ran in one touchdown.

Coach Mike King listed Jordan Brittain, Jesse Hutchins, Jeff Tripp and Jason Larson as defensive standouts.

He noted, “We didn’t turn the ball over, but we had major breakdowns at crucial times during the game…We ran the ball effectively in spurts, but we need to be much more consistent on offense.” Coach King concluded.

The Columbians host Washougal this Friday, Sept. 27, at 7 p.m.

RJHS Volleyball Sweeps Ilwaco Matches

Rainier Junior High School (RJHS) Volleyball traveled to Ilwaco Monday, Sept. 23, and both seventh and eighth grade teams won their matches in three games.

The eighth grade squad won its games 25-10, 25-9, 15-7, with two players serving 100 percent. Aspen Norman served 16 balls, had 11 aces and two kills. Breana Edwards had nine aces on 13 serving attempts and five  kills.

Lena Lentini played for the seventh and eighth grade squads and took full advantage of it. She served 32 balls with 16 aces and had two kills.

A squad of five seventh graders and Lentini beat the Ilwaco seventh grade 22-9, 25-16, 15-5.

Kyla Howell was the team’s top server with 14 serves, seven aces and a kill.

The RMS seventh grade team is 2-1, the eighth grade squad is 3-0 for the season and were scheduled to travel to Neah-kah-nie on Wednesday, Sept. 25.

Rainier Runners Compete at Three Course Challenge

Rainier Columbian cross country runners participated in the Three Course Challenge at Camp Rilea on Saturday, Sept. 21, and the Catlin Gabel Handicapper on Monday, Sept. 23.

The Three Course Challenge involved runners being randomly selected to race on one of three courses of varying difficulty. In the boys’ races, Rainier was one of the very few division four schools that had at least five runners complete each of the three courses.

On the 4500 meter easy course, Brian Guisinger placed ninth for division four schools with a time of 17:46.

“Bryan Falls, freshmen Riley Richardson and John Graff had excellent runs on the hard course.” said Coach Brad Pinkstaff.

“Eleanor Pierce improved her time by almost 10 minutes from her previous run last week. The middle school girls team finished third overall, led by sixth graders Abby Zuber and Kaitlyn Zuber.” he added.

On the 5000 meter difficult course Bryan Falls ran the course in 23:41, John Graff ran 25:12; Jared Thomas, 27:52; T.J. Tompkins, 32:04; Michael Morton, 33:25.

Rainier runners on the 5000 meter medium course were: Emmett Earlywine, 22:20; Johnathan Guisinger, 22:32; Alex Gates, 25:12; Logan Davidson, 26:30, and David Placido, 30:54.

On the 4500 meter easy course Brian Guisinger ran 17:46; Trevor Lefebvre, 20:35; Riley Coulter, 25:23; Tim Seybert, 25:23, Jon Zielinski, 28:26, Nolan Abell 30:04, and Zach Coulter, 30:25.

Riley Richardson ran the girls 5000 meter difficult course in 31:23.

In the 3000 meter junior high girls race the times were: Abigail Zuber, 16:21; Kaitlin Zuber, 17:03; Tashina Morton, 19:13; Skyla Ade, 19:40; Sarah Zuber, 19:46, and Gracie Jacobs, 28:38.

Catlin Gabel Handicapper

At the Catlin Gabel Handicapper the Columbians continued to improve. “Cassie Jacobs, Colton Verhoef, Zach Coulter and Logan Davidson ran excellent races. The middle school girls had a good race by Tashina Morton.” said Coach Pinkstaff.

Boys varsity 5000 meter times were: B. Guisinger, 21:50; Falls, 22:05; Earlywine, 22:44; J. Guisinger, 22:47; Gaff, 23:17; Gates, 25:05; Davidson, 25:25; Thomas, 26:44; Tompkins, 27:39; Colton Verhoff, 29:01; M. Morton, 29:03; R. Coulter, 31:03; Placido, 32:01; Reece Lowry, 32:25; Seybert, 33:45; Abell, 32:37; and Z. Coulter, 36:02.

Richardson led the Lady Columbians in the girls 5000 meter with a time of 29:14. Cassie Jacobs ran 40:58 and Eleanor Pierce ran 43:55.

In the junior high girls 3000 meter the runners were: A. Zuber, 18:08; S. Zuber, 18:45; K. Zuber, 21:28; T. Morton, 21:28, and Brianna Harrison, 30:06.

The Columbians will run in the Southwest Christian Invitational on Friday, Sept. 27. 

Lady Tigers Fall to Warrenton and Corbett

Clatskanie High School’s volleyball team continues to work on intensity and communication, but lost home matches on Sept. 17 and 24.

On the 17th, the Tigers played Warrenton at home, and won the first game 25-22, before losing, 18-25, 4-25 and 11-25.

Danielle Berntsen had four kills.  McKenna Clappé had two kills and two blocks.  Hallie Blodgett served two aces.

Again on their home court Sept. 24, the Tiger girls lost in three games to Corbett,  8-25, 8-25, 7-25.

Coach Heather Strong credited Berntsen with playing well at the net, while Jewell Penn and Saige Anderson turned in good performances in the back row.

Rainier/Clatskanie Girls Soccer Tie Stayton

The Rainier/Clatskanie Girls Soccer team tied Stayton 1-1 on Thursday, Sept 19.

Laken Garman scored the team’s single goal and was selected as offensive player of the game.

“Emily Goodwin was named the defensive player of the game for her outstanding play especially in the second half of the game.” said Coach Erin Fox.

The Columbians were scheduled to face Stayton again on Wednesday, Sept. 25, at Rainier Junior/Senior High School.
