The Clatskanie Middle School girls racked up three more victories, traveling to Jewell on Wednesday, Nov. 20, and hosting Astoria on Monday, Nov. 25.
The Lady Tigers red team beat Jewell 26-19, coming out early with a 6-2 lead at the end of the first quarter. They led 12-5 at the half, but Jewell rallied and closed the gap to 16-13 in the third. The Tigers scored 10 in the fourth to end 26-19.
Coach Lori Simmons credited Zoie Baker for her offensive play as post. Baker scored 10 points. Olivia Warren scored 6. Sierra Bechdoldt, Madeline Moravec, Macy Simmons, Lita Blodgett and Jaydon Heath each added two points.
The white team beat Jewell 21-12, leading 8-4 at the half. Jewell came within one in the third for an 11-10 game. The Tigers pulled away in the fourth, scoring 10 points.
Maris Jackson made five points, while Chloe Davidson, Marissa Candela and Blodgett each contributed four.
Despite very aggressive play by Astoria, the Tiger red team dominated in scoring. Clatskanie led 8-5 at the end of the first quarter then pulled away with an 18-7 lead at the half. The Tigers continued scoring in the third for a lead of 28-14. Astoria closed the margin to 39-28 at the end.
Olivia Warren led the offense with 13 points. Simmons scored eight, sinking 100 percent of her free throws. Baker and Ashley Maertens added four points each.
“This was a very physical game. The girls played the best game yet. They played hard the whole game and never let down,” said Coach Simmons
The white team fell 26-34 to Astoria. Jackson scored 10 points. Davidson, Simmons and Candela each contributed four.
Coach Simmons said, “We got out-hustled on defense tonight and, unfortunately, this cost us the game. We will rally back for next Monday’s game.”
While middle school sports are already underway, Clatskanie Middle/High School’s winter sports season kicks into top gear next week with opening games for high school (HS) basketball as well.
On Monday, Dec. 2, middle school (MS) girls basketball travels to Knappa. The white team plays at 4 p.m., followed by the red team at 5 p.m.
On Tuesday, Dec. 3, MS wrestling has a home match with weigh-in starting at 4 p.m.
On Wednesday, Dec. 4, MS girls basketball hosts Rainier. White plays at 4 p.m., followed by Red at 5 p.m.
The high school boys and girls basketball teams host Vernonia. Junior varsity (JV) girls basketball starts at 4:30 p.m. in the CMHS main gym. JV boys start at 4:30 p.m. in the Clatskanie Elementary School gym. Girls varsity plays at 6 p.m. at the high school, followed by the boys at 7:30 p.m.
On Thursday, Dec. 5, MS wrestling travels to Seaside. Weigh-in starts at 4 p.m.
On Friday, Dec 6, the JV2 girls host Seaside: 6 p.m. All other HS basketball teams travel to Hood River for a tournament starting at 3:30 p.m. with JV girls. JV boys play at 4:30, varsity girls at 6 and varsity boys at 7:30.
Saturday games at Horizon Christian have been canceled.
