Clatskanie & Rainier Girls Basketball Results

Lady Columbians Defeat Tigers 55-35

Despite a strong second half and outside shooting by guard Shelby Weldon, the Clatskanie High School (CHS) girls basketball team was unable to overcome a first-half deficit to Rainier High School (RHS) on Thursday, Jan. 23, and lost 35-55.

Rainier led 16-9 at the end of the first quarter and then held the Tigers to three points in the second for a 31-12 lead at the half.

CHS Coach Dawn Warren credits the girls’ press break for freeing up the Tiger offense in the second half. Through the second half Clatskanie kept pace with the Columbians and the game ended 55-35 Rainier.

Weldon scored a season high 20 points largely from three-point territory. Weldon grabbed three rebounds and a steal.

Maisy Horness contributed six points for the Tigers and snagged six rebounds and two steals.

Rainier guard Jenny Westlund led the Columbian offense with 14 points and grabbed six rebounds.

Jadyn Crape scored eight for Rainier and Dominique Pedersen added seven.

Shelby Saylors grabbed five steals.

Rainier’s junior varsity (JV) girls defeated Clatskanie 45-19, with Abby Rosian scoring 10 points for RHS.

Tigers Defeated by Catlin Gabel 42-53

“The first half was the best that we’ve looked all season,” said Coach Warren of CHS’s first-half lead Saturday, Jan. 25.

CHS was up 15-13 at the end of the first quarter and led 24-22 at the half.

In the third quarter Catlin Gabel pulled ahead 35-30 and stretched the lead to 53-42 at the end.

Horness scored 15 for the Tigers and snagged 16 rebounds and two steals. Rachel Haas and Megan Strong each contributed seven points.

Rainier Falls 24-44 to PAA

The Lady Columbians fell 24-44 to Portland Adventist Academy (PAA) on Tuesday, Jan. 21.

The game started slow with RHS trailing 5-6 at the end of the first quarter. PAA pulled away to lead 20-12 at the half.

Veera Moilanen scored nine points for Rainier.

Rainier’s JV girls beat PAA 55-28. Rosian scored 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Ashley Bush also made 10 points.

Rainier Defeats Warrenton 28-17

Holding their opponents to five or less points each quarter, the Columbians defeated Warrenton 28-17 on Saturday, Jan 25.

The first quarter ran 11-4 for Rainier and the second was choked to a near stand-off with four points scored by Rainier and two by the Warriors. RHS won by attrition leading 22-11 in the third.

Westlund scored 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds.

Moilanen added seven points and snagged 10 rebounds.

The Columbian JV won 53-23. Julia Taylor scored 14. Haley Schimmel added 13, and Savannah Harkleroad contributed 12 points.

RHS host De La Salle at 6 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 31, followed by the boys’ game at 7:30 p.m.

The Columbians host Corbett on Tuesday, Feb. 4, also at 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

Tigers Fall 41-50 to Columbians

Clatskanie and Rainier varsity boys basketball teams faced off Thursday, Jan 23, on the Columbian’s court and Rainier won 50-41.

On Tuesday, Jan. 21, Clatskanie High School (CHS) lost 47-62 to 10th-ranked Oregon Episcopal School (OES) and then beat Catlin Gabel 74-58 on Saturday, Jan. 25.

At Rainier the Tigers and Columbians started the game head-to-head with CHS trailing by one point at the end of the first quarter. Rainier pulled ahead in the second to lead 25-19 at the half.

The Tigers’ offense was held to five points in the third, while Rainier managed 11.

Both teams sunk more shots in the final quarter. Clatskanie made 18 and Rainier scored 15 and held on for the 51-42 victory.

Will Burghardt led CHS in scoring with 19 points. Jaden Johnson contributed six points.

Rainier’s Jeff Tripp scored 17. Jordan Brittain added 12 and Adam Langley contributed 11 points.

CHS vs. OES

Against OES on Tuesday, the Tigers fell behind 7-15 in the first quarter and although they gained momentum OES continued to pull away to a 62-47 victory. The score was 19-33 at the half and 33-46 at the end of the third quarter.

Burghardt scored 16 points. Colten Puzey and Cooper Starkel each added 10 points.

CHS vs. Catlin Gabel

CHS’s 74-58 victory over Catlin Gabel started with a 15-15 tie at the end of the first quarter.

In the second, the Tigers surged forward scoring 29 points to close the half 44-26. CHS slowed in the third and Catlin Gabel closed the gap to 51-42.

CHS scored 23 in the final for a 16-point lead.

Burghardt made 31 points. Puzey scored 20 and Codi Blodgett added 15 and snagged nine rebounds.

Coach Lucius Jones said, “In this game we were able to stay aggressive and attack the hoop. We got some of the Catlin Gabel players in foul trouble and shot 33 free throws.”

CHS Wrestlers Win Double Dual

The Clatskanie High School (CHS) wrestling team won both sides of a double-dual meet in Warrenton High School (WHS) on Wednesday, Jan. 22, beating WHS 48-36 and De La Salle (DLS) 48-36.

Against WHS Isaiah Ives, 132 pounds, lost his match by pin. Breanne Hendricks, 138, lost by pin. Cristobal Rojas,152, won by pin. Lukas Roubal, 160, won by pin. Chris Puckett, 170, won by pin. David Adkinson, 182, won by pin. Kyle Smith, 285, lost by pin.

Dalton Littleton, Travis Puckett, Lynn Siltala and Avery Davis won by forfeit.

Against DLS Dalton Littleton, 106, lost by pin. Travis Puckett, 120, won by pin.

Ives, 132, lost by pin. Hendricks, 138, lost by 20-10 decision. Rojas, 145, won by pin. Chris Puckett, 170, won by pin. Adkinson, 182, won by pin. Davis, 220, won by pin. Smith, 285, lost by pin.

Siltala and Roubal both won by forfeit.

RHS Wrestling Opens League Action with Two Wins

Rainier wrestlers opened the 2014 dual meet portion of the 3A Special District 1 wrestling season with two,decisive wins over DeLaSalle, North Catholic (NC), and Warrenton on Wednesday, Jan 22, in Warrenton.

The Columbians scored a perfect 84 team points to blank DeLaSalle NC in the first dual of the event and went on to defeat Warrenton, 66-15.

Winners by fall in the wrestled matches against DeLaSalle NC were Gunnar Brooks (106 pounds, 35 seconds), Emmett Earlywine (120, first round), Ethan Harrel (132, first round), Josh Garoutte-Larsen (138, second round), Trevor Lefebvre (145, second round), Parker Mogray (170, 46 seconds), Tyson Lorentson (182, first round) and Jesse Hutchins (285, first round).

Receiving wins by forfeit for Rainier were Justice Larson (113), Ryan Schmunk (126), Tyler Coulter (152), Logan Usher (160), Garrett Dees (195), and Jason Larson (220).

Winners by fall in Rainier’s 66-15 win over Warrenton were Schmunk (126, first round), Harrel (132, third round), Coulter (152, first round), Usher (160, first round), Dees (195, first round) and Jesse Hutchins (285, 50 seconds). Lorentson won by first round injury default at 182 pounds.

Receiving wins by forfeit for the Columbians were Brooks (106), Earlywine (120), Lefebvre (145), and Jason Larson (220).

In junior varsity action, Austin Bruce won one match  by first round fall against DeLaSalle NC in the first round.

RHS Hosts Invitational Swim Meet

Rainier boys swim team took second in the Rainier Invitational on Jan. 24. On the boys side, LaSalle took first with 602 points, Rainier was second with 451,  Tillamook was third with 450, Valley Catholic was fourth with 191, and Molalla was fifth with 118 LaSalle also took first for the girls’ teams with 556 points, followed by Valley Catholic  427, Tillamook 349, Molalla  329, Rainier 143.

Boys 200 Yard Medley A Relay: third, 1:56.13. Nik Griffith, backstroke; Sean Rosian, breaststroke; Thomas Tompkins, fly; Jeremiah Kramberg, freestyle.

Columbian Wrestlers Win Twice in Tillamook

Despite having five wrestlers out of the varsity line up due to injury or illness, Rainier won two of three wrestled duals at the Tillamook Country Smoker Wrestling Tournament held on Friday, Jan. 24, in Tillamook.

The Columbians defeated Estacada, 42-37, and Newport, 42-28, before falling to host Tillamook, 32-42.

Winners for Rainier in the Estacada dual were Gunnar Brooks (106 pounds by forfeit), Justice Larson (113, 22 second fall), Emmett Earlywine (120, third round fall), Ethan Harrel (132, first round fall), Garrett Dees (195, second round fall), Jason Larson (220, 23-second fall) and Jesse Hutchins (285, forfeit)

Winners for the Columbians in the Newport dual were Brooks (106, forfeit), Earlywine (120, second round fall), Harrel (132, forfeit), Usher (160, first round fall), Parker Mogray (170, forfeit), Jason Larson (220, first round fall) and Hutchins (285, forfeit).

Rainier winners against Tillamook were Brooks (106, 37-second fall), Justice Larson (113, 41-second fall), Earlywine (120, forfeit), Harrel (132, 20-3 technical fall), Jason Larson (220, 5-4 decision) and Hutchins (285, second round fall).

Rainier hosts Corbett and Scio on Wednesday, Jan. 29, for a 3A Special District 1 wrestling dual meet with action scheduled to begin at 5pm in Chris Binder Memorial gymnasium.

Receiving wins by forfeit for the Columbians were Brooks (106), Earlywine (120), Lefebvre (145), and Jason Larson (220).

In junior varsity action, Austin Bruce won one match  by first round fall against DeLaSalle NC in the first round.
