Rainier Columbian wrestlers earned enough points to bring home the third place team trophy from the 2014 OSAA/US BANK/LES SCHWAB TIRES 3A State Wrestling Championships, held at Portland’s Memorial Coliseum on Saturday, March 1. The Columbians also came home with eight state place winners, including one champion.
For the team trophies, Glide won the team title with 182.5 points, followed by Vale (167), Rainier (151) and Dayton (117.5).
Senior Jesse Hutchins, who was seeded second in the 285-pound weight class, won one match by fall and two matches by decision, including an exciting 1-0 victory in the championship semifinals over third-seeded, Oren Hills of Santiam Christian, to advance to the championship finals match on Saturday night.
Hutchins took care of business quickly in the finals match with Kye Yragruen of Vale. Hutchins aggressively used a duck-under go -behind to take his opponent to the mat where Yragruen tried to roll through. Hutchins made the adjustment to a head and arm then held Yragruen down for a fall in 1:27 to win the state title.
Other finalists for the Columbians included junior Justice Larson (113), senior Garrett Dees (195) and senior Jason Larson (220), who all finished in second place.
Juniors Emmett Earlywine (120) and Trevor Lefebvre (138) both lost out in the championship semifinals, but battled back to finish in third place for Rainier.
Freshmen Ryan Schmunk (126) placed fifth and his classmate Gunnar Brooks (106) finished in sixth place for the Columbians.
Other Columbians competing at the state tournament were Logan Usher (160), Ethan Harrel (126, two wins by fall), Tyler Coulter (138, one win by fall), Derek Clark (170, one overtime win by decision) and Tyson Lorentson (182, one win by disqualification).

The four Clatskanie Tiger wrestlers who qualified for state finished the 2013-14 season with a 17th place team finish at the 2014 OSAA/US BANK/LES SCHWAB TIRES 3A State Wrestling Championships last weekend.
Glide won the team title with 182.5 points, followed by Vale (167), Rainier (151) and Dayton (117.5).
Clatskanie’s Chris Puckett finished in fourth place at 160 pounds for Clatskanie. Puckett drew a bye in the first round then lost in the quarterfinals. In consolation action, Puckett won two matches by fall to advance to the medals rounds before losing in the match for third place.
Other Tigers competing at state were David Adkinson, 170 pounds, one win by fall; Cristobal Rojas, 138, one win by fall, and Travis Puckett, 120.
Four Clatskanie High School (CHS) teams and one Rainier High School (RHS) team received Dairy Farmers of Oregon Academic All-State recognition for the winter sports’ season of 2013-14 by earning grade point averages (GPAs) over 3.0.
The CHS wrestling team took second place for 3A teams statewide with a GPA of 3.30.
With a of 3.67, the RHS girls’ basketball team excelled over local teams and took sixth place for Oregon School Athletics Association (OSAA) 3A girls’ basketball teams.
The CHS boys basketball team earned a 3.44 GPA for 12th place.
CHS Cheerleaders had a 3.34 GPS and CHS Girls basketball earned a GPA of 3.30, but neither team placed in the top 20 for their sports.
The Rainier/Clatskanie Youth Soccer Club is gearing up for the upcoming season of recreational soccer for youth in the Clatskanie and Rainier area.
All who are interested in being involved are welcome to attend an annual general meeting scheduled on Tuesday, March 18, at 7 p.m., at the Clatskanie People’s Utility District (PUD) meeting room, 495 E. Columbia River Highway.
New members are always being sought, said a spokesperson for the club. This is an opportunity to meet the board members and ask questions.
