The Clatskanie High School (CHS) Tigers started their 2014 baseball season with a win and a loss in Oregon before heading to Arizona for their annual spring break trip, where they started with a 10-0 victory.
CHS defeated Knappa 9-6 in the first baseball game of the season Tuesday, March 18.
To start the game, the Tigers scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Clatskanie scored four in the third inning and Knappa answered with one. The Tigers led 6-1 until the sixth inning when they scored twice more.
CHS scored a final run for a 9-1 lead. The Loggers rallied for five runs to bring the final score to 9-6 Tigers.
Mica Karber led the way at the plate, going 2/3 with a double and a run batted in (RBI).
Damien Strowger had two hits and two RBIs. Griffin Haas hit a two-run single for two RBIs.
German George got the win for the Tigers, pitching two innings, allowing one run and three strikeouts.
3-2 Loss to Portland Christian School
Clatskanie fell 3-2 to Portland Christian School (PCS) Thursday, March 20.
Portland scored one run in the bottom of the first inning and the Tigers answered in the second.
PCS scored again in the fifth and held a 2-1 lead going into the seventh inning.
Nick Donaldson tied the game with a run-batted-in (RBI) single.
The Royals answered with a walk-off one-out single to win.
Mica Karber, Micah McLeod and Thomas Shelby each had a pair of hits.
Karber struck-out five batters and threw 14 first-pitch strikes.
German George struck-out three.
10-0 Victory Over Colorado Academy
In Arizona, the Tigers skunked Colorado Academy 10-0 in seven innings Monday, March 24.
The Tigers rounded the bases twice in the second. In the fourth they added four runs, highlighted by Karber’s three-run double.
Karber was 3/3 with two doubles and four RBIs.
Trevor Berg had three hits and Seth Makinson made two hits including a two-run double. Pitchers George, McLeod, Tanner Dykes and Thomas Shelby combined for a no hitter
JV Defeat Cortez in Double Header
Clatskanie’s junior varsity (JV) swept a double header against Cortez High School in Phoenix Monday, March 21.
In the first game, Cole Warren pitched the 9-1 win allowing 1 run on zero hits and five walks.
Job Karber led the way at the plate, with two hits and three RBIs.
Alex McCallister had three hits.
In game two, McCallister got the win on the mound for the Tigers, allowing two runs on two hits and two strikeouts. Karber had one hit and three RBIs in the second game.
The junior varsity (JV) softball team from Clatskanie High School (CHS) lost two games and tied one and a Scappoose tournament Friday and Saturday, March 21 and 22.
On Friday the Lady Tigers played Jesuit and lost 1-11 in five innings.
CHS tied Scappoose 12-12 on Saturday, then lost 11-15 to Roosevelt.
Kenzie Mitchell, Haley Blodgett and Kacy Strong pitched for the Tigers.
Maisy Martin, Sage Miller, and Strong led the CHS offense.
“After losing to Jesuit on Friday, we got over the first game jitters and played much better,” said Coach Diane Mausen.
“Our defense still needs some work, but we can only look to improve!” she added.
It took the Clatskanie Lady Tigers just five innings to defeat Portland Christian 14-2 for the first softball game of 2014 Thursday, March 20.
Clatskanie went 13-31 at bat.
On offense Kacy Strong hit 4-4 with a triple, two doubles and a single for four runs batted in (RBI).
Katie Burgher hit 2-3, a single and a double, for three RBIs. On the mound, Burgher struck out seven batters and had two walks.
Sage Miller want 2-3 at bat with a single and a double for 2 RBIs.
“For the first game of the season, the girls played really strong. It was a great start and we anticipate this will be one of many wins,” said Coach Gary Kuehl.
The Tigers play in Heppner Wednesday and Thursday, March 26 and 27, for the Heppner Tournament.
All youth in grades 7-12 attending Clatskanie Middle/High School interested in playing golf are invited to attend the first meeting of the Clatskanie Youth Golf Club.
The meeting will be held on Monday, March 31, at 5 p.m. at the Clatskanie People’s Utility District (PUD) meeting room, 495 E. Columbia River Highway. Parents are encouraged to attend.
