ABOUT THE CHIEF
THE CHIEF is an independent family-owned newspaper that has served the people of Northern Columbia County and Eastern Clatsop County for over a century. It has been owned and operated by four generations of the Steele family since 1922. THE CHIEF is rich in good will and loyalty among its readers, as demonstrated by numerous local and statewide awards, including: The Oregon Education Associations Media Award- 1990 and 2003; membership in The Oregonians 100 Year Club in recognition of a century of public service; the Columbia County Fair Boards Friends of 4-H Award; Oregon State University Small Family Business of the Year Award; the Oregon Athletic Director Association Distinguished Service Award; the Clatskanie Arts commission Outstanding support of the Arts award; the OSU Extension Service Outstanding Cooperator Award; the Knappa Future Farmers of America Distinguished Service Award; the Outstanding Media Achievement Award from the Governor’s Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse Programs.
WHO READS THE CHIEF
THE CHIEF has a paid circulation of over 2,450. Centered in Clatskanie in Northern Columbia County, just 10 miles from the Clatsop County line, THE CHIEF enters approximately 2,100 households in the Lower Columbia area each week. Using an average of 3-4 persons per household, our newspaper reaches 6,000 to 8,000 potential customers of Lower Columbia area businesses. THE CHIEF is the newspaper of record for the cities of Clatskanie and Rainier, and the Clatskanie and Rainier School Districts. Our complete coverage of board meetings, policies and school and community activities attracts hundreds of readers. THE CHIEF also offers in-depth reporting on the Clatskanie PUD, Clatskanie Rural Fire Protection District, Port of St. Helens, local law enforcement and other agencies.
WHY ADVERTISE IN THE CHIEF
It is the mission of THE CHIEF to cover the people, places and events of Northern Columbia County and Eastern Clatsop County more intimately and far more completely than any other newspaper could or would. The fact that about 600 copies of THE CHIEF are mailed weekly to former Clatskanie area residents around the region, nation and world is testimony that this hometown newspaper is like an old family friend to most of its readers. CHIEF subscribers do not scan its headlines, then toss it on the recycling pile. CHIEF stories and pictures are carefully scrutinized for the names and faces of relatives and friends; news articles are read closely because they deal only with issues that have a direct impact on the residents of the Lower Columbia area. Because most subscribers keep and read their CHIEF over a weeks time or more, advertisements are seen repeatedly.
