Rainier High School wrestling opened the 2013-14 season with second place finish at the Three Rivers Classic wrestling tournament held at Mark Morris High School in Longview on Saturday, Dec. 7.
The Columbians originally were scheduled to open at Tillamook on Friday, Dec. 6, but that tournament was cancelled due to inclement weather.
Castle Rock won the 11-team tournament with a team score of 290 points, followed by Rainier, 232; R.A. Long, 169); Hockinson, 114; Mark Morris, 110; Kalama, 109; Kelso JV, 90; Woodland, 86; Wahkiakum, 82; Stevenson, 79, and LaCenter, 47.
Taking the championship medal in their respective weight classes were Emmett Earlywine, 126 pounds; Trevor Lefebvre, 145; Tyson Lorentson, 182; Garrett Dees, 195, and Jason Larson, 220.
Tyler Coulter, 160, and Jesse Hutchins, 285, both finished in second place.
Logan Usher, 170, finished third, and Gunnar Brooks, 113, finished in fourth place for the Columbians.
Rainier travels to Banks on Wednesday, Dec. 11, to compete in the dual format Hank Schmidlin tournament before traveling to Scio to compete in the Holiday Tournament on Saturday, Dec. 14. Action is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. in Banks and at 9 a.m. in Scio.
Rainier High School (RHS) wrestling is hosting Ken Chertow for a two-day wrestling camp to be held at Rainier Junior/Senior High School (RJSHS) on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 21 and 22.
The camp is open to all area wrestlers ages youth through high school.
Check in, registration and payment will be held on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. Camp runs from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
On Sunday, check-in for new arrivals is at 7:45 a.m., with camp from 8 a.m. to 12 noon.
Cost for both days is $100 or $60 for one day. Wrestlers who register and pay in full by Friday, Dec. 13, at www.kenchertow.com will receive a free instructional DVD.
Parents and coaches may attend and video all sessions free of charge.

The Clatskanie High School (CHS) Tiger boys’ basketball team started their 2013-14 season with a win, beating Vernonia High School (VHS) 71-70 on Wednesday, Dec. 4.
VHS took an early lead, scoring 22 points in the first quarter, while the Tigers scored 17.
Clatskanie came back in the second with 20 points to lead 37-36 at the half.
In the third quarter CHS widened the gap to 55-48. They managed to hold off the Loggers’ fourth-quarter rally for a one-point victory.
Leading CHS scorers were: Will Burghardt with 21 points, Jaden Johnson with 16, and Colten Puzey with 10.
Puzey also contributed eight rebounds and four assists. Andrew Norgren had eight rebounds also. German George made three assists.
“I was happy with everyone coming off the bench. All players made good contributions and it was a great team win,” said Coach Lucius Jones.
He added, “I’m glad we could face some adversity early in the season. This will help us down the road.”
Snow forced the postponement of games Friday and Monday evenings. The Tigers are scheduled to host Portland Christian on Thursday, Dec. 12, at 7:30 p.m.
They will travel to Knappa on Saturday, Dec. 14, and to Oregon Episcopal School on Tuesday, Dec. 17.
