Track and Field Send Three Tigers to State

Three members of the Clatskanie High School track and field team have qualified to competein the Oregon Schools Activities Association (OSAA) state track and field cahmpionships in Monmouth this weekend.

The Tigers amke their way to state by virtue of how they finished at the Lewis and Clark League District Meet on Saturday, May 12, at Catlin Gabel High School in Portland.

Individuals taking first and second place at the Lewis and Clark League district meet move on to state.

Cedet Bailey qualified to compete in both the 100 and 200-meter races after placing second in both events.

Carley Lannan will compete in the girls shotput and discus. Lannan threw second in shotput, 38’4.5”, but took first in discus with a distance of 96’9”.

Adam Siltala took fifth place in the 1500-meter race but his time beat the state qualifying standard, moving him on to the state competition.

State action is set to get underway at 11 a.m. Friday and Saturday, May 18-19 at Western Oregon University in Monmouth.

Five Columbians On to State

Five Columbian track and field athletes qualified  to compete at the Oregon Schools Activities Association (OSAA) State Track and Field championships Friday and Saturday, May 18-19, at Western Oregon University in Monmouth.

All Lewis and Clark League event title winners and second place finishers qualified for state competition.

The 3A Lewis and Clark District meet was held on Saturday, May 12, at Catlin Gabel High School in Portland.

Rainier’s 4×100-meter relay team, made up of Erik Sutfin, Craig Pedersen, Devon Marshall and Clay Wimmer, will compete in both races at state after placing first in the 4×100.

The 4×400-meter team, Sutfin, Pedersen, Marshall and Brian Guisinger also qualified,  taking second place.

Marshall was the league champion in both the 200 and 400-meter races.

Sutfin will also compete in the 300-meter hurdles after taking second at the district meet.

Alex Hisey qualified for state competition in shot put with his second place throw of 37’9.5”.

The lone Lady Columbian to make the trip to Montouth is Alya Womack who qualified with her second place finish in the girls discus.

Lady Tigers Win League Title; Advance to State Championships

Clatskanie High School varsity softball team claimed the Lewis and Clark League title after a double header against Corbett on Friday, May 11.

As league champions, Clatskanie is guaranteed a spot in the Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA) 3A state softball championship playoffs beginnning Wednesday, May 23.

The Lady Tigers lost the opening game 2-4.

Kierra Kallunki pitched, striking out nine while allowing six hits.

Kelli Bugher hit 1-3.

Clatskanie won the nightcap 8-0.

Kallunki was the winning pitcher, striking out 12 while allowing only three hits.

Lacey Bitton and Kellie McArthur both hit 2-3 while Teauna Hughes went 1-1.

The Lady Tigers are set to play non-league games on Saturday, May 19, in Gaston against Gaston and Knappa.

CHS Baseball Falls From League Playoffs

Clatskanie High School boys baseball team’s post-season play came to an end Tuesday with a 4-2 loss to Warrenton.

The Tigers now fall from further competition in the  playoffs for the second spot in the Lewis and Clark League and a trip to the state championship rounds.

The Tigers gave up three runs in the third inning and were unable to recover.

Stranding nine runners with bases loaded in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings, Clatskanie left a total of 14 runners on base for the game.

Jake Wemmer took the loss for the Tigers on the Warrior diamond. He went 1-1 at bat, but reached base three times on balls.

Shaine Warren had a double for Clatskanie.

The Tigers ended the season with a 13-11 record.

 

Rainier Girls Bag Five Wins, Lose One

Rainier girls varsity softball team stacked up five wins while only taking one loss in recent play.

Rainier vs. Dayton

Rainier topped Dayton 5-0 in a Columbian-hosted non-laegue game on Wednesday, May 9.

Kylee Crape pitched eleven strikeouts and allowed only three hits in the win.

Crape also slammed two home runs, stacking up four runs batted in (RBI) and hitting 2-2.

Kaylea Knox hit one home run, batting 1-2 and bringing home one RBI. Ronni Gray hit 1-2.

Rainier vs. Warrenton

The Lady Columbians took two wins in a Rainier-hosted doubleheader against Warrenton on Tuesday, May 8.

Rainier outscored the Lady Warriors 11-0 in the first game.

Crape pitched nine strikeouts while allowing only three hits.

Top hitters were Knox 2-3 with one RBI, Gray 2-2 with one RBI, Crape 3-3 with four RBIs, Jessee Gibson 2-2 with one RBI and Geneva Clarke 2-2 with one RBI.

Rainier had another strong win in the nightcap, taking the game 10-0.

Gibson pitched seven strikeouts while allowing only two hits.

Knox hit 2-3 at the plate, slamming a home run and two RBI’s.

Gibson also hit a home run, swinging 1-3 and had three RBI’s.

Other hitters were Crape 3-3 with two RBIs and Shelby Saylors 2-3 with one RBI.

Rainier vs. Clatskanie

The loss came in the opener of a doubleheader with Clatskanie on Monday, May 7,  on the Lady Tigers’ diamond when the Lady Columbians fell 1-0.

Crape pitched six strike-outs and allowed five hits.

Top hitters were Jessee Gibson 2-3, and Crape 1-2.

In the eleven-inning nightcap, Rainier topped the Lady Tigers 5-4.

Crape pitched nine strike outs and allowed 10 hits.

Top hitters were Knox 4-6, Gray 2-4 with one RBI and Gibson 2-4 with one RBI.

Rainier closed the season in second place with  10-2 Lewis and Clark League win-loss record and 14-5 on the season.

 

Rainier Girls Take on VC Thursday

Rainier High School girls softball team will take on Valley Catholic Thursday, May 17, for second place in the Lewis and Clark League playoffs and a spot in the opening round of the state championships.

The game will be played in Rainier, with the time yet to be determined.

Valley Catholic defeated Corbett 8-5 on Tuesday to advance to the game against Rainier.

 

CHS Sweeps Corbett in Doubleheader

Clatskanie’s varsity baseball team finished its regular season Friday night, sweeping a doubleheader with Corbett 6-5 and 11-1.

In game one, Corbett jumped out to a 5-0 lead and the Tigers were playing catch up until the bottom of the seventh. Down 5-3 in the seventh, Mica Karber got a one out double and Jake Wenmer and Nick Donaldson each got on-base on errors.

With two strikes, Seth Makinson fouled off six pitches before hitting a bases-clearing walk-off double down the line. Colton Puzey was two for two with three runs batted in (RBIs).

In game two, the Tigers scored five in the first inning and never looked back.

The Tigers won 11-1 in five innings, led by German George’s pitching and hitting. On the mound, George only allowed two hits and struck out seven. Meanwhile, he was three for three with two RBIs.

Storm Engen, Jake Wemmer and Seth Makinson each had a pair of hits.

 

Tigers Top Gaston

Clatskanie’s varsity baseball team beat Gaston 12-2 in six innings at a Tiger-hosted non-league game Wednesday, May 9.

Freshman Mica Karber got the win as pitcher, striking out seven batters while allowing seven hits.

Karber also hit 3-4 at the plate and had four runs batted in (RBIs).

Shaine Warren and Jake Wemmer each added two hits.

 

CHS JV Girls Top Corbett

Clatskanie junior varsity (JV) girls softball team brought the season to a close with two wins in a doubleheader against Corbett last Friday.

The opening game saw the Lady Tigers blank the Cardinals 15-0 in five innings.

In the five inning nightcap Clatskanie scored 19 runs while holding Corbett to nine.

Katie Burgher pitched both games, getting 14 strikeouts on the day.

“It was a great day to play and end the season,” said JV coach Diane Mausen. “We had almost everyone scoring today.”

Brittney Abbott had a “powerhouse” day slamming four home runs.

“I enjoyed the opportunity to coach this group,” Mausen continued. “Our exchange students were an absolute delight and hopefully they gained an understanding of the game.”

Clatskanie finished the season with an eight win and three loss record.
