Rainier swim team competed in the Wahtonka Invitational at The Dalles on Jan. 11.
Teams attending were Pendleton, La Grande, La Salle, Valley Catholic, The Dalles Wahtonka, Hermiston, Molalla, Gladstone, Baker, Scappoose and Rainier. Rainier boys placed 6th, while the girls placed 11th.

Rainier wrestlers outscored the second place finishing team by 93 points to bring home the team title from the 16-team Ilwaco Beach Brawl, Saturday, Feb. 1, at Ilwaco High School.
The Columbians tallied 221.5 team points, followed by Ilwaco 128.5, Astoria 121.5, Hoquiam 109, Willapa Harbor 108, Castle Rock 102, Kelso 100.5, Ocasta 80, Neah-Kah-Nie 69.5, Toledo-Winlock 66, Warrenton 62, Seaside 50, Nestucca 44, Wahkiakum 39, and Clatskanie 34.5.
Garrett Dees (195 pounds) and Jason Larson (220) both finished in first place for Rainier. Second place finishers were Gunnar Brooks (106), Justice Larson (113), Emmett Earlywine (120), Tyson Lorentson (182) and Jesse Hutchins (285).
Third place medal winners were Trevor Lefebvre (138), Tyler Coulter (152) and Logan Usher (160).
Dillon Lane (126) and Derek Clark (170) both finished in fifth place for Rainier.
The Columbians travel to Gervais on Wednesday, Feb. 5, to take on Colton and Gervais in a special district one league 4-way event. Action is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.

Rainier hosted Scio and Corbett for league dual meet wrestling action on Wednesday, Jan. 29, and came away with two wins.
The Columbians, who received 14 wins by forfeit for the event, defeated Corbett, 64-11 and Scio, 62-15.
Winners of wrestled matches for the Columbians in the Corbett dual were Gunnar Brooks (106 pounds, 58 second fall), Trevor Lefebvre (138, 14-2 major decision), Garrett Dees (195, third round fall) and Jason Larson (220, second round fall).
Receiving wins by forfeit for Rainier were Emmett Earlywine (120), Josh Garoutte-Larsen (126), Tyler Coulter (145), Logan Usher (160), Derek Clark (170), Tyson Lorentson (182), and Jesse Hutchins (285).
Rainier winners of wrestled matches in the Scio dual were Brooks (106, 18-2 technical fall), Lefebvre (138, second round fall), Jason Larson (220, 5-4 decision) and Hutchins (285, first round fall).
Columbian winners by forfeit were Justice Larson (113), Earlywine (120), Garoutte-Larsen (126), Coulter (145), Usher (160), Clark (170) and Dees (195).
The Clatskanie High School (CHS) boys’ basketball team defeated Corbett 74-64 on Tuesday, Jan. 28, but fell 51-87 to Portland Adventist Academy (PAA) on Thursday, Jan. 30.
CHS and Corbett were head-to-head with 11 each at the end of the first quarter. The Tigers broke away in the second quarter to end the half 33-24. They continued their momentum in the third, reaching a 53-37 lead.
Corbett rallied with 27 points in the fourth quarter, but the Tigers scored 21 and won 74-64.
Will Burghardt racked up 24 points for the Tiger. Colten Puzey scored 14 and Codi Blodgett contributed 13.
Coach Lucius Jones said, “In this game we got great offensive and defensive contributions from multiple players. We finished a lot of good shots and were able to extend the lead in the second and third quarters.”
CHS vs. PAA 51-87
The Tigers face second-ranked PAA on the Cougars’ home court Thursday, Jan 30.
PAA came out hard, leading 26-11 after one quarter and 49-23 at the half. The Tigers continued to trail 34-68 at end of the third quarter and 87-51 at the buzzer.
Burghardt scored 27 points. Blodget added eight.
Coach Jones said, “This was a tough game for us from the start. We had good shots that weren’t falling, and PAA was executing their offense at a high rate.”
He continued, “I like how we played hard until the end, but we need to work on not falling into the tempo that the other team wants to play.”
Rainier High School swimmers attended a meet at Seaside Aquatic Center Jan. 14 where they competed against Seaside, Scappoose and Banks.
The Rainier boys beat Scappoose 122 to 40, while Seaside beat the Rainier boys 107 to 62 points.
On the girls side, the Lady Columbians beat Banks 100 to 16 points; Scappoose beat Rainier 119 to 44 points, and Seaside beat Rainer 115 to 43 points.

The Rainier girls’ basketball team defeated De La Salle (DLS) 39-30 Friday, Jan. 31, on the Columbians’ home court.
Rainier took a 14-6 lead in the first quarter. They lost momentum in the second and third, allowing DLS to tie the game 24-24 at the end of the third.
Rainier rallied in the final quarter, scoring 15 points to DLS’s six to win 39-30.
Jenny Westlund scored 16 points and grabbed three steals.
Veera Moilanen made 10 points and snagged five rebounds.
Rainier was scheduled to host Corbett Tuesday, Feb 4. They travel to Valley Catholic on Friday, Feb. 7, and to Oregon Episcopal School on Tuesday, Feb. 11.
The Clatskanie High School (CHS) girls’ basketball team fell 28-46 to Corbett on Tuesday, Jan. 28, and 21-45 to Portland Adventist Academy (PAA) on Thursday, Jan. 30.
Against Corbett, the Tigers started slow, scoring four points in the first quarter and five in the second to trail 9-29 at the half.
They gained momentum in the third quarter, scoring nine points. Then finished with 10 in the final quarter.
Maisy Horness scored six points for the Tigers and grabbed five rebounds and three steals.
Rachel Haas also scored six and snagged two steals. Megan Strong scored four points and grabbed four rebounds and four steals.
CHS vs. PAA
The Tigers were outscored 5-14 by PAA in the first quarter. They trailed 12-26 at the half. PAA held them to four points in the third quarter and five in the fourth.
Shelby Weldon led the Tigers’ offense with 11 points and six rebounds. Haas added six points and snagged three steals and three rebounds.
“The girls worked hard and moved the ball around well. We were able to get up 55 shots, which is a huge improvement for us,” said Coach Dawn Warren.
The Tigers travel to De La Salle on Friday, Feb. 7. They host Valley Catholic on Thursday, Feb. 13, at 6 p.m., for the final game of the year.
Rainier High School participated in a dual meet at Eisenschmidt Pool in St. Helens against Tillamook, Banks, and Scappoose on Jan. 21.
Rainier boys beat Scappoose 104 to 56. Tillamook beat Rainier 88 to 76. Rainier girls beat Banks 85 to 24. Scappoose beat Rainier 108 to 52. Tillamook beat Rainier 110 to 49.

The Clatskanie Middle School (CMS) boys basketball white team fell 40-57 to Rainier on Monday, Feb 3.
The Tigers trailed 10-39 at the half. They out-scored the Columbians 30-18 in the second half, but still feel short. Coach Kim Rogers said, “You have to play hard for four quarters!”
Dustin Sewald led the Tigers with 13 points. Ryan Watson and Crew Blodgett each contributed seven.
The red team was defeated 32-43 by Rainier. They trailed 18-28 at the half.
Devon Jones scored 11 points and four rebounds. Kees Tjaarda, Trevor Maul, Jaden Corley and Foster Evenson each added four points.
Evenson grabbed 15 rebounds.
“We ran our offense well, we were aggressive, just could not buy a bucket,” said Coach Rogers.
He noted that Jones shot 75 percent from the free throw line.
